Precautions
It is important to take precautions when using candles and oil burners.
- Never leave a candle or oil burner alight when you leave your home;
- Never leave a burning candle or oil burner in a child's bedroom;
- Never leave candles or oil burners burning overnight;
- Never burn a candle right down into the holder;
- Never use flammable liquids such as spirits or petroleum to provide heat for oil burners;
- Use in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions;
- Use in a safe area without the threat of them being knocked over;
- Use candles and oil burners only on non-combustible surfaces, e.g. terracotta;
- Keep candles and oil burners away from small children, they should only be used in the presence of adults;
- Keep candles out of draughts and away from furnishings and clothing;
- Keep candles and all open flames from flammable liquids;
- Keep children and pets away from garden candles and lanterns;
- Do not leave candles or oil burners near open windows, the flame could come in contact with the curtains and set them alight;
- Do not restrict the airflow to oil burners;
- Do not move a candle or oil burner while it is lit;
- Do not use larger than necessary candles as this can cause excessive heat to build up inside the oil burner, possibly leading to cracks, “flare-ups” or radiated heat damage near the burner;
- Always put votive and scented candles in a glass or metal holder as they liquefy to release their fragrance;
- Always supervise burning candles, particularly when children and pets are around;
- When re-lighting candles trim the wick and extinguish it if it starts to smoke;
- If using more than one candle allow 100mm between each one;
- Ensure candles and oil burners have a stable base so they can not tip over and ignite surrounding flammable materials;
- Ensure candle holders fit candles snugly so they can not topple out, and the candle holder itself is not made of plastic or other flammable material;
- Be aware that unglazed clay or ceramic oil burners can crack more readily than glazed coated oil burners;
- Supervise burning insect repellent candles supplied in thin ceramic or clay pots as the containers can crack under intense heat and may cause a fire;
- Check for cracks in the reservoir holding the oil and dispose of the oil burner if it is cracked.
